Polished Concrete Isn’t Paint – It’s Personality
If you’ve ever looked at a polished concrete floor and thought, “Hmm, why does that part look lighter or darker than the rest?” – you’re not alone. In fact, you’re probably noticing one of the most misunderstood aspects of polished concrete: its natural variation.
At NZ Grinders, we get asked all the time: Why isn’t my concrete floor one solid colour? The answer is simple – concrete is a bit like a fingerprint. No two pours are the same. And when we grind and polish it, we’re revealing all the personality that’s been hiding under the surface. You’re not getting a uniform, painted finish – you’re getting something real.
Understanding Visual Variation: Marble Surface, Aggregate, and All the Good Stuff
Concrete is made up of cement, water, sand, and aggregate. The magic (and sometimes madness) begins when we grind it down. If you’ve opted for a marble surface finish – the creamier look with no aggregate exposure – you’ll get a soft, natural tone. But the trowel marks, float patterns, and curing differences still come through. And that’s part of the charm.
Now, if you’re going for a more stone-exposed look, we’re diving deeper into the slab – and that means we might find swirls, sand patches, or even some cheeky air pockets. It’s not a flaw. It’s flavour.
Blotchy? Or Beautiful?
In the polished concrete world, the term “blotchy” is often used negatively. But here’s a hot take: maybe it shouldn’t be.
We see “variation.” We see “depth.” We see a floor that doesn’t look like it was rolled off a vinyl printer.
The differences in tone and texture are usually the result of the concrete’s pour, how it was trowelled, where the sun hit during curing, or even how much water was in the mix. These things can’t be changed after the fact. What we can do is polish the floor to bring out the best in it – whatever it’s got to offer.
How We Help You Visualise the End Result
One of the most helpful steps we take at NZ Grinders is showing you samples – real, physical slabs – to give you an idea of what your floor might look like. We can even grind test patches on your actual floor (usually in a hidden area) so you can see what’s underneath before we commit to the full job.
Because once we start, there’s no Ctrl+Z. That’s the beauty (and the risk) of real concrete – it’s got its own agenda. We just help bring it to life.
What About Colour Tinting or Dyes?
We get this one a lot – “Can you make the floor a solid grey/black/coffee/whatever?”
Short answer: we don’t do colour tinting. Why? Because we believe in working with the slab, not hiding it. Adding dyes or stains can be unpredictable, especially on older or inconsistent concrete. Plus, they often require ongoing maintenance to keep their look.
Our philosophy at NZ Grinders is to reveal, not cover. We highlight the natural beauty of your floor, not paint over it.
So What Should You Expect?
Expect a floor that’s uniquely yours. Expect movement, variation, and character. If you’re after a flat, uniform colour – concrete polishing might not be the right fit. But if you’re keen on a durable, sustainable surface with honest, natural beauty – we’ve got you covered.
You’ll end up with a floor that’s full of texture, tone, and visual interest. One that changes slightly as the light moves through the day. One that doesn’t hide its imperfections, but embraces them.
