Swimming Pool Renovation & Pool Surround Resurfacing

We provide the prep work ready for your painter.

Renovate tired pool areas with clean, safe, mechanically prepared surfaces that last. NZ Grinders focuses on grinding, corrective preparation, and light repairs for both existing pools (inside the shell) and pool surrounds (decks, coping, waterline zones). Work is completed with commercial dust control and methods suited to NZ UV, salt/chlorine, and high-traffic family use.

What we work on

  • Existing concrete and fibreglass pool shells

  • Waterline zones and coping edges

  • Concrete pool surrounds, patios, and steps

  • Tiles and grout scheduled for removal and replacement

Existing pools — preparation & light repairs

Tailored for refinishers, tilers, and coating installers who need a properly keyed, clean substrate.

  • Precision grinding (walls & floor): Diamond grinding to key the surface for new coatings/finishes and to even local high spots.

  • Removal of loose/peeling paint: Mechanical removal of flaking coatings for a stable base.

  • Chlorinated-rubber paint removal: Safe, thorough stripping of old chlorinated rubber systems that have been over-painted or degraded.

  • Screed correction (imperfections): Spot-levelling and feathering to address ripples, humps, and shallow depressions prior to new lining or tile work.

  • Chip/spall patching (non-structural): Superficial concrete repairs to tidy edges and restore a smooth, refinish-ready surface.

  • Fibreglass liner paint removal: Mechanical removal of failed paint layers to prepare for re-coating by your pool specialist.

Scope note: We handle mechanical preparation and superficial repairs. Structural remediation and waterproofing are by your pool builder/waterproofer.

Pool surrounds — grinding, texture, and tile/grout removal

Make the area around the pool safer, cleaner, and ready for new finishes.

  • Concrete grinding & edge refinement: Removes sealer residues, evens lippage, and prepares for reseal, hone & seal, or new coverings.

  • Bush-hammering for traction: Adds controlled micro-texture for wet areas, steps, and ramps to support slip resistance (aligned with AS/NZS 4586 guidance).

  • Strip existing waterline tiles: Careful removal of tiles at the waterline/coping interface to prepare for new installation.

  • Grout removal for re-tiling: Rakes and cleans joints to a consistent depth for reliable re-grout and set-out.

  • Paint removal (fibreglass adjacent/liners): Where liners or adjacent fibreglass surfaces meet the surround, we remove failed paint to a sound substrate.

Finish note: If you’re proceeding to a hone & seal, penetrating sealer, or other coating, our prep creates the profile your installer expects. Decorative flake systems are decorative only (not waterproofing).

Our renovation workflow

  1. Inspect & plan: Check shell/surround condition, coping, joints, and any ponding. Mark defects and agree on patch locations and removal extents.

  2. Protection & isolation: Mask fixtures, skimmers, and adjacent finishes; set up extraction and containment.

  3. Mechanical removal & grinding: Diamond tools selected to suit substrate (concrete or fibreglass), with dust and slurry control.

  4. Corrections & light repairs: Feathering, screed touch-ups, chip/spall patching, and joint clean-outs as specified.

  5. Clean-down & handover: Surface vacuumed/washed, ready for your tiler, coater, or waterproofer, with notes on any areas needing specialist attention.

Safety, durability & compliance

  • Slip resistance: Textures (e.g., bush-hammered or honed) can be targeted to support wet-area performance per AS/NZS 4586 categories.

  • UV & chemical awareness: Methods and materials considered for NZ sun and chlorinated/salt environments.

  • Dust & debris control: Commercial extraction and tidy site practices to protect adjacent landscaping and pool equipment.

What’s included vs. excluded

  • Included: Mechanical grinding, paint/coating removal, waterline tile/grout removal, superficial concrete patching, screed touch-ups, fibreglass paint removal, and surround texture creation (e.g., bush-hammering).

  • Excluded: Structural pool repairs, waterproofing membranes, supply of new tiles/coatings, and colour tinting of concrete.
